St. Bartholomew's Polyphony Choir UPDATE  JANUARY 2013

A very happy New Year to you all

Huge thanks to you all for the work you put into the the music preparation for Christmas this term. Your singing was truly awesome, especially for our Christmas Concert. The music was absolutely wonderful (or even better!!!!), and I'm so pleased that you received such well-deserved plaudits from those who were present to hear your singing (and Antony's playing!). Special thanks to the Sopranos who arrived for the extra half-hour on Tuesdays on the run-up to ensure they were well practised - a wonderful sign of commitment.

For those of you who read in the press abut the Pope 'disowning' the ox and the ass in the crib....' the true translation of his written words "
Keine Krippendarstellung wird auf Ochs und Esel verzichten" (in the recently published final volume of his well-worth-reading trilogy Jesus of Nazareth) is: "No presentation of the crib is complete without the ox and the ass". I wonder how many of our journalists will run an apology! Got the Ox and the Ass in your crib still? GOOD!

We're all back to 'work' again on 6th January for the 11.30am Epiphany Mass, and then have to arduously struggle through our first practice evening on Tuesday 8th January with a social round of drinks and nibbles in the upstairs hall at 8pm - I'll see you all there to look forward to 2013!

To finish, I thank you all for what you continue to put in to making our Choir what it is: a happy, successful, prayerful, and liturgically-relevant service to both Our Lord and our parish. I hope you and yours have a very happy, healthy and thoroughly musical 2013.
Tony

Choir Committee

The next Choir Committee meeting is on Monday 14th January - anything you might wish to see discussed should be directed to Sabina, Terry J., Jeannette R. Joan, John, Richard or Tony. I will reply personally to you after any discussion about anything you may wish to raise and put forward.

New Members

It would be really good to add a few more to our numbers, especially to the ladies' sections. We've been so grateful to the new members that we've come to know and love over the last twelve months or so. If you know anyone with a capable voice who might enjoy the Choir for what we are, then please do encourage them to call in one Tuesday evening and see what we're all about. Or even to have a drink with us on the 8th January - just invite them along with you.

The year ahead

Our priority is to finish learning the William Sewell St. Philip Neri Mass for Sunday 7th April - it's been a long while since we added a new Mass to the repertoire, and I'm keen to include this one. As well as that, we have to revise Stainer's The Crucifixion and the Arwel Hughes's adaptation of Albinoni's haunting Adagio to the words of Stabat Mater for the Lenten Meditation on the Wednesday of Holy Week (27th March).... and also prepare for Good Friday and Easter!

As you already know, we'll be singing Faure's Requiem on 'All Souls' day, 2nd November. Practices will start in the summer term.

New music for Christmas 2013 is in the pipe-line already (!), and I expect scores to be ready to add to your folders at music-checking in July.

The most recent Dates List is now up on the Web site HERE. Hopefully, given the length of notice offered, you will be able to avoid any clash of interests when booking future holidays and events. It's not just me..... we all hope so!!

Also up on the Web site are the draft music plans for the first six months of the year. Not quite complete yet, but almost there.

This month's quiz question

The Holy Father, Pope Benedict XIV, famously opened a Twitter account in December 2012. Under what name is he Tweeting? Answers by email by 31st January. As I write this, he has already attracted nearly 1.35 million Followers!!!

Last month's quiz question was answered by eight people: four of them were correct in identifying the first Parish Priest at St. Michael's, Pollards Hill as Fr. William Gallagher: We'll draw the winner at our post-Christmas social.

Twitter

The Holy Father has followed our lead in deciding to utilise a  Twitter account! For those of you who understand this, follow us on @stbartschoir - and the Pope on @???????? (!) of course!! It's all a bit new at the moment, but my previous experience suggests it may develop fruitfully over time. For those of you who don't understand a word of this, it's very easy to join Twitter, even if it's just to Follow rather than Tweet! We have five Followers so far!!

A little music book

Richard, very kindly, passed me a copy of a little A6 80pp booklet published by the Catholic Truth Society called Music in the Liturgy. Priced at £2.50 I can thoroughly recommend it to you all. If you'd like a copy, please let me know by 31st January, and I'll order appropriately. If ten or more of you order it I will be able to offer it to you for £2 rather than £2.50.

Did you keep your used stamps?

Hope so. Do let me have them if you have, and thanks for your support for Help the Heroes. Keep it up! It easy and free, and helps others, if you are charitable enough to tear the stamps off!

Continue your prayers please.....

.. for Anne M., Jeannette SR, Maria and Mary E. and Fr. Michael (hip operation on 4th February). Hopefully we'll see the first four (and Eddie - is anyone in touch with him?) on the 8th January?

Hymns for 2013

LAST CALL! Does anyone have any favourite traditional Catholic hymns that they feel we either don't sing, or don't sing enough? O bread of heaven comes to my mind immediately, and perhaps in this Year of Faith we might dig out Full in the panting heart of Rome? Do let me know if you think of any other hymns that may be worthy of revival.

I have received two replies so far (including 'Sweet Saviour bless us, earwig-o'!). Any more?! How about 'Full in the panting heart of Rome', and do you know THIS Advent hymn?

Errata

A number of errors crept into last months edition of UPDATE! My apologies, and well done to those who spotted them. To have anyone in the Choir who remembered W.S. Lloyd Webber if he had died in 1914 would be remarkable!! Father Kenefeck apparently said the 9am Mass at Bart's, and I won't dwell on the other errors! Hopefully this issue will prove better!!

Blogs

I occasionally mention Blogs in my emails to you all. There are quite a number that are worthy of a regular read to keep informed of a Catholic perspective on things. My favourite four are:

Father Tim Finnigan, Father Ray Blake, Chiesa and Father John Zuhlsdorf.

Did you know.....

The Kyrie, Sanctus and Agnus Dei from the Missa de Angelis originated in France, but the Gloria came from Spain. See HERE for more.

And finally.....

What's your New Year's resolution J !!? Arriving at Choir punctually at all times? Having your music sorted before practices begin? Not talking at times when I am? Smiling on Tuesdays even when......!!!!? I am willing to offer other helpful suggestions to you if you wish to ask?! Mine is to finally give up smoking and (maybe) cut down on the drinks (a wee bit anyway, sometime!).
