St. Bartholomew's Polyphony Choir UPDATE  MARCH 2013

What we mustn't lose sight of

As I write, The Crucifixion and the Stabat Mater are really beginning to take shape nicely. As last year, this is a really different occasion for us: not a stand-in-front concert, but a real opportunity to tell a story in words and music to an audience that is able to hear us but not be distracted by seeing us; the story of Christ's Passion and His Mother's angst at the foot of the Cross performed in a manner that places the focus on the event and not on us. It's a 'something' (can't think of the appropriate word as I type) that seldom takes place when choirs sing in public. We really mustn't lose sight of the fact that we are telling the story, and that stories cannot be received and understood unless they are heard, and that means the words and the punctuation of them are crucial to the occasion. Think on it.

Beyond that (and even more importantly) we must remember that our prime function is liturgical. We have Good Friday, the Easter Vigil and Low Sunday to prepare for. The last-mentioned concerns me, so I intend to remove the traditional break from Choir practices on the Tuesday after Easter to enable appropriate preparation. BUT, as a very kindly, and thoughtful, man, we will have post-Easter drinks in the Hall on Tuesday 9th April, as a thank you and more. Just this year mind!!

Tony

Please remember.....

Anne M., Mary E. and Fr. Michael in your prayers. Also Mary Ryan RIP, Jeannette's mother-in-law.

New Music for 2013

My intention is to order Carols for Choirs 5 in May or June, together with at least one new Christmas item thanks to the 2012 Christmas Concert funding. This gives us time to number and label the copies (apart from those copies of CfC5 that have been pre-ordered for personal ownership which will remain pristine) in time to be added to the music at Music Checking in July.

If anyone wants their own Fauré Requiem score, please let Jeannette know by the end of April.

Extra Sung Mass 8th September

As most of you know, Eddie and Jean Sanders have asked that we sing at the 11.30am Mass on Sunday 8th September for their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Father Tom has agreed, and I ask you to put the date in your diaries now. Both are well known parishioners, and Eddie has run the parish youth club forever.

Sheet Music

I have quite a large number of single original octavo copies of largely three-part choral music (around 40 secular and sacred works) arranged for upper voices only. Is anyone able to suggest a good home for them? Do let me know.

Strange to think that....

.....by the time I put together the next issue of Update we'll hopefully have a new Pope! Something none of us would have anticipated when I last wrote. There's an interesting few words relating to one of his last addresses as Pontiff HERE. Worth a little time to read and digest. Please God we will have a new successor to Saint Peter that continues to promulgate the interpretation of Vatican II that was originally intended.

This month's quiz question

C.H. Kitson's Mass in D Major has been in our repertoire for decades, so I ask: what does the H stand for? A special prize for Easter this month (do you have a hutch at home?!!!).

Richard was the lucky winner of January's Quiz Question, and received a bar of fruit & nut chocolate to go with his jar of minced garlic paste(!) - the second time he's been drawn out first - well done, Richard! The answer to February's question was Howard Goodall (we sing his Psalm 23 - the theme to The Vicar of Dibley) and of the ten correct answers received Andrew was this month's lucky winner of a new cookery book!

Revised Dates List

I have updated the Dates List, and it is available from our Web site - please do print off a copy and keep it visible at home for reference.

Outing to Finchcocks Musical Museum

The transport is booked and paid for for our outing on 9th June and the day's agenda is being finalised. We'll leave from Green Lane near Hermitage Lane at 10:15 (very promptly!). I anticipate leaving Finchcocks at 17:30. As soon as Jeannette has confirmed the day's programme with the museum she'll let us all know more.

Singing Plainchant

Would there be an interest if I offered parish-based Day Course in learning more about the history of and the singing of Plainchant? If there is, I might approach Nick Gale, Director of Music at St. George's Cathedral. Your thoughts?

And finally.....

YouTube HERE to again enjoy in anticipation!

A holy groan!!

Lost on a rainy Friday night, a priest stumbles into a monastery and requests shelter there. Fortunately, he's just in time for dinner and was treated to the best fish and chips he's ever had.

After dinner, he goes into the kitchen to thank the chefs. He is met by two brothers, "Hello, I'm Brother Michael, and this is Brother Francis."

"I'm very pleased to meet you. I just wanted to thank you for a wonderful dinner. The fish and chips were the best I've ever tasted. Out of curiosity, who cooked what?"

Brother Michael replied, "Well, I'm the fish friar."

Father turns to the other brother and says, "Then you must be...."

"Yes, I'm afraid I'm the chip monk..."
