St. Bartholomew's Polyphony Choir UPDATE  AUGUST 2014

What a wonderful party!

Wow! Common consent seem to suggest that our 2014 Choir Party was one of the best ever!! What a thoroughly lovely and happy evening. Well done Jane, and to all of you. Wonderful spread (thanks to Bren and Ken for the sausage rolls!!). Well done to our Alto birthday 'girls': the bubbly certainly helped the evening go with a swing! Thank you all!

PS: There didn't seem to be any drinks to speak of left over!

Music Checking

As with the party, what an absolutely great turn out - I am just so grateful to you all. For the first time ever, the whole job was done on the evening, and Jeannette Ryan has nothing to do whatsoever over the summer except lie in the sun!! She's understandably thrilled, and conveys her thanks to you all also.

Don't forget.....!

Choir starts again on Tuesday 2nd September, to prepare for our annual Mass of Thanksgiving a week later on Tuesday 9th as well as our October Mass. Christmas and our 'Parables' 2015 Concert (see below).

A Wedding and a Funeral - help, please

As you all know, we have been asked to sing at a Wedding at 1pm (please note the time) on Saturday 9th August. Many thanks to so many of you for committing to it. We shall be singing Mozart's Ave Verum and Bach's Jesu, joy of man's desiring, as well as supporting the singing of Praise my soul, As I kneel before you and Now thank we all our God.

The funeral is the day before, Friday 8th August at 12.30pm - we have been asked to help the small family in leading the hymns, as yet unknown. The normal 10am congregation will obviously not be present to support the singing, hence the request. If you are able to assist them, then please pop the date and time in your diaries and on your calendars, and I'll email out again shortly.

Latest Dates List

THIS was handed out at the Party, and to one or two others at Music Checking. Retain and consult, please.

Monica Milligan

I'm sure you will join with me in wishing Monica well for the future. She was always very helpful to me and to the Choir as Parish Secretary, and she will be missed.

Father Tom Cooper

Equally, I'm sure you will wish the parishioners at St. James the Great, Petts Wood, and Father Tom, well as he takes up his role as Parish Priest from 2nd September.

Parables Concert 2015

As I'm sure you will all have noted, I have provisionally put Sunday 17th May at 7pm aside for our concert of Lloyd Webber's The Good Samaritan and Shütz's The Pharisee and the Publican and more. We'll have an early look at the music when we start back in September. PLEASE put this in your diaries NOW.

REMINDER - Choir Outing 2015

I've received a few interesting suggestions, and I thank those who submitted them. With a few days to go there is a little time yet for people to add more before the end of August. A decision will be made at the Committee Meeting on 8th September.

Christmas is coming

Unfortunately(!), nobody shared my love of Jingle Bells. I might have access to what a well known arranger calls a 'funky' version of Good King Wenceslas, but, if successful, I will hold that for 2015 I think.

Meantime, for those of you interested, I have put up the first, and very provisional, music lists for Christmas HERE.

August's Quiz Question

No question this month. Too hot to think!!

I'll catch up on the June and July questions when we start back in September.

Prayers, please.....

George Norton, Anne Mitra, Mary & Frank Elliott, Maria Leszczynska & Family. I ask also for Special prayers, please, for a Choir member's Private Intention.

For your coffee breaks

An interesting commentary from Peter Khasniewski on Church Music versus Utility Music.

One of the newest and best sites with resources for learning Gregorian Chant HERE; sheet music, recordings translations and instructions, all offered for free - deserves increasing recognition. Chant Notation Guide: Chant Pronunciation Guide - a brilliant resource.

Anticipating next month's Last Night of The Proms on the organ - Thomas Heywood plays Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 on the grand organ of St. Peter's Cathedral Adelaide, Australia HERE.

For coffee and a sandwich....

A lovely atmospheric 30 minute documentary from 1961 HERE - you never know, some of you might see yourselves in it!!!!
