St. Bartholomew's Polyphony Choir UPDATE  NOVEMBER 2014

Attendance on Tuesdays

Once again, I do ask that you make Tuesday evenings a priority in your lives between now and Christmas (and then onwards!). We always have a huge amount of learning to do at this time of year, and attendance at rehearsals is expected. Obviously illness is something that cannot be avoided, but otherwise..... Thank you.

Lighting in the Gallery

I'm glad the change of bulbs and the reflector cleaning in the gallery has improved things somewhat. The main lighting in the church is coming to the end of its life. I understand that the bulbs that are used in the big lights are no longer available, and there is only a handful of spares left with the church. It seems that the parish will have to bring in a lighting engineer and examine at options for the future at some stage. The changes will be expensive, and may even require a post-works re-decoration of the church. Rest assured that I shall be in a position to ensure when the time comes that I have a say on the matter of the gallery lighting. Ultimately we will be provided with lighting that will be as near as ideal as is possible for the choirs that use the gallery. In the meantime, I do ask for your patience, and assure you that I completely understand the difficulties some of you have been experiencing.

Rose Marsh's Funeral Mass 6th November

Rose's Funeral Mass is at 11 or 11.30am (note time) on Thursday 6th November. Father Michael Jones will be concelebrating with Fr. Deo and Fr. Gregory. Rose was a real parish stalwart, a long-time 11:30 Mass attendee and Poly Choir lover. She will be known to the majority of you, I suspect. Her brother Kieran has asked if the Choir (as many as are able to) would be kind enough to attend the Mass and lead the singing – music to be advised, probably hymns only. Please would you note in your diaries, and I'll ask on Tuesday to see if we have a quorum. If you aren't able to be there on Tuesday (hopefully none of you!) and are still able to sing, please do let me know.

Christmas Carol Concert

Last year's concert of carols and readings was given to a packed church. This was in no small way due to the reputation you have ensured our Christmas concerts has gained, but its success was also the result of pre-selling tickets to family members, and to parishioners outside church after Sunday Masses in the weeks beforehand. The tickets will remain priced somewhat below the Albert Hall at £2 (no concessions), which basically covers the cost of printing programmes and tickets, the mulled wine and the mince pies in the hall after the event. Please do plan ahead as you will be receiving an envelope from Jeannette later this month, and it would be good if everyone was able to sell their tickets in good time.

We shall need help with the selling of programmes on the doors on the day, and to take the retiring collection afterwards. Do you have other halves who might be willing to help out? Please let Jeannette know if so - one less thing for her to worry about nearer the time. I am considering a change in the beneficiary of this collection this year, and will let you know the outcome of my deliberations in due course. Thoughts welcomed.

Descanters..... for Christmas

Once again, our descanters have a lot of learning and revision to do on the run up to Christmas. Last year we had a few descant-only sessions at 7.30pm on Tuesdays, and, as most of you are aware, I propose to offer the same again - it worked so well for us all. I intend to start these sessions on Tuesday 4th November, and I am most encouraged by you all for your support. It saves so much time during the full-Choir practice, and offers you the opportunity to (potentially!) sing like angels!! Thank you.

The Parish Newsletter

Until a new Parish Web site is developed I have agreed that our Web site will host the weekly editions of the Newsletter for parishioners and others to refer to.

Love divine all loves excelling

THIS recording of Love divine all loves excelling from Lloyd Webber's The Good Samaritan is from the CD I bought some years ago that alerted me to the potential of The Good Samaritan as the basis for our forthcoming concert. Please do turn on your speakers, listen, learn and enjoy!

As an aside, one of the orchestral pieces Lloyd Webber remains most well-known for (again, seldom heard today) is his 1951 Symphonic Tone Poem 'Aurora'. A delightful ten minute listen to follow up Love divine all loves excelling with.

Prayers, please.....

John Ambler, George Norton, Anne Mitra, Mary & Frank Elliott, Maria Leszczynska & Family. I continue to ask you also for prayers, please, for a Choir member's Private Intention.

Parish history

As a result of a little bit of research I have been able to expand, update, further illustrate and occasionally correct the details on the Parish History page on our Web site. Well worth a look (in my humble opinion!).

November's Quiz Question

The reverse of the main Crucifix over our altar  (facing the Retro Chapel) does not depict Christ crucified. How would you best describe, within ten words, the depiction portrayed? Prize for the nearest complete description. Do have a look if you haven't looked at it before. It always reminds me of the 15th Station of the Cross....

October's question: the priest wears a chasuble at Mass, the Deacon wears a ????. I've only had a couple of answers to this so far, including one from you know who....... !!

For your coffee breaks

For those of you who like days out in London, it is worth keeping an eye on Ian Visits, which not only provides little erudite reviews but also a comprehensive Events Listing.

Le Mystere de voix Bulgares - one of the most amazing ladies choirs I've ever heard, and all of it unaccompanied! Thanks to NW.

Norbury during WW2 - a reminiscence from Anthony Mundy.

When London's main airport was within walking distance of Norbury.......

And finally, pure feline musical genius - Mindaugas Piecaitis: Norah, the Piano Cat. The entire four minutes or so of a performance that will be long-remembered by all who watch it! Thanks to VM.

Our Holy Souls

During this month of The Holy Souls we might pause and remember those who have been members of the Polyphony Choir over the last 45 years, and who have now departed from this world:

Peter Barter, Pauline Brinn, Yolantha Coombes, Stephen Cowie, Jan Czarnecki, Cliff da Costa, Peter Farrell, Joe Ferry, Christine Grogan, Beth Hale, Sally Hawksworth, Geraldine Hernon, Tom & Josie King, John Laker, John & Irene Mackesy, Eamonn Madden, Sheila Mahoney, Ursula Marshall, Noel Murphy, Bunty Murray, Daphne Murtagh, Tom & Betty Pannell, Monica Pendlebury, Sibila Pinto, Bernadette Potter, Archie & Aurora Rigamonti-Jones, Tom Roe, Jim Rowntree, Edna Stanley, Kath Thomas, Joe Todd‑Pokropek, Doris Weeds and Eunice Yiannari.

I unfailingly read these names aloud every year during the Bidding Prayers at our annual Mass of Thanksgiving, but we seldom have enough time to
thank them and pray for the happy repose of their souls.

Eternal rest, grant unto them O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace.......... Amen
