St. Bartholomew's Polyphony Choir UPDATE  FEBRUARY 2015

Congratulations to Terry Jupp

Our huge congratulations to Terry on being honoured by Pope Francis with the Papal Award Benemerenti for her services to the Polyphony Choir and to Catholic Education.

Richly deserved, and it is just wonderful to see such amazing loyalty over so many years rewarded so very appropriately. Terry will be receiving the honour from Bishop Pat at the 11:30 Mass on Sunday 15th March, with a reception in the hall after Mass.

Easter 2015

It is likely that the Family Choir will not be joining us for the Easter Vigil - we may therefore have a little bit more than usual to take on board learning-wise. Please be aware. Cantors, please would you confirm, as soon as possible, your availability on the evening so that I am able to plan accordingly.

Christmas 2015

Father Deo is very happy that we learn the Ronald Corp Christmas Mass for this year's Midnight Mass and Epiphany. We will not learn the Credo, just the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus and Benedictus and Agnus. Snippets only can be heard HERE - tracks 11, 12, 14 and 15. We will commence learning this in the 8-8.30pm slot on Tuesdays after the Parables Concert.

Parables Concert

Our rehearsals have started well. Thanks to all of you who have got to church as promptly as possible for the 'first half hour'. We will spend more time on the concert music after Easter. I have put in place a final rehearsal on the day before, the 13th June at 2.30pm - hopefully it will not be too long! The full programme for the Parables Concert will be available in early March.

Choir Outing - 10th May

The current thoughts for the day are as follows: Leave Norbury by coach in time to attend 10:30 sung Mass at St. Magdalen, Brighton. Coach to our lunch venue in Brighton, then some free time for toe-dipping. Travel to Carole's at Peacehaven for afternoon tea and cakes. Please complete 'the board' for the day out that went round last Tuesdays evening (27th Jan). I am then able to ask for quotations for a coach (something a little less 'heritage' this year!). Once I have booked a coach, I will (applying my usual generosity for such days!), advise you of the likely cost. Once the cost has been determined, we'll put a further board round so that we know exactly how many to book for the coach, the restaurant, and to assist Carole's plans. £10 deposit, please, by end of March.

February Quiz - a Word Search!

Can you find and circle in pen 28 composers and arrangers whose music we sing (and have done, in almost all cases, very recently), one for each day of the month. Click HERE to open, print and start searching, or pick up a hard copy from me on Tuesday.

Answers in to me by Tuesday 3rd March.......... Prizes for those who find the most!

January Quiz - Reminder

Just a reminder that answers need to be submitted by next Tuesday, 3rd February, either online or into my hands at Choir practice! From what I've seen from relies in already, even half correct may be up for a prize!!

If you need a reminder look HERE.

Possible Concert Date....

.... with the Orchestra at St. Philip's in Norbury on Sunday 28th June at 7.30pm.

The Orchestra have asked if we might join them for a concert of British music which would include Lloyd Webber's Prince of Peace Mass with the orchestration approved by the composer for them  in 1979. More details to follow if early discussions prove fruitful.

There will obviously be a prior rehearsal with the orchestra to accommodate.

Prayers, please.....

Oliva Msahala (Father Deo's mother), John Ambler, George Norton, Anne Mitra, Mary & Frank Elliott, Maria Leszczynska & Family and Jeannette Storace-Rutter. I continue to ask you also for prayers, please, for a Choir member's Private Intention.

Dates List

Our latest Dates List is available HERE. Please do, as always, have a look.... etc., etc....!!

Noveritis

In some parishes it is traditional to sing (or read) the Noveritis, announcing the moveable feasts of the Church's year ahead, after the Gospel  at Epiphany. This is the 2015 Noveritis chant in Latin for the Latin Extraordinary Form of Mass. However....

The current (2010) Roman Missal we use every day at St. Bart's for the English Ordinary Form of Mass not only continues to make reference to it on the page for Epiphany's 'At the Mass during the Day', but also has the English chant fully written out on page 1505 (if you have a study copy, which replicates in every way the Altar Missal in a very thick paperback size).

Cranmer's Top 100 Christians of 2014

Catholic Church fails to behead a single person in 2014 (hat tip to DPB)

The Bibelregal - a truly portable 'organ'!

Cut Out and Colour cards from Father Peter (1943) for your children and grand children!!! (hat tip for both the above to Father Ray Blake)

Whilst in nostalgia mode, I was fascinated by this little programme, and wondered if our recruitment efforts are always aimed in the right direction! Those who sing Bass should be be afraid!!

The truly great Oliver Latry improvises: as one who struggles to even remotely improvise on even a simple hymn tune, this sort of skill leaves me speechless! I'm also envious of his settee and electric kettle in the organ loft at Sacré-Coeur!! At 7' 25" in things take an unexpected turn!! To hear the singing from the nave above his improvisation at the end is just amazing!! Happy Birthday to all of you with Birthdays in February!! Speakers on........ sit back..... and hold on tight!
