St. Bartholomew's Polyphony Choir UPDATE  MARCH 2015

Veneration of the Cross on Good Friday

I think it is worthwhile re-stating this.........

The Veneration of the Cross on Good Friday is open to absolutely everyone, not just Catholics. Please do not be afraid to come on down with us. Approach the cross, genuflect or bow as you get close the the Cross, and then bend to kiss the feet of Crucified Jesus.

Asking for a blessing instead of receiving Holy Communion

And also this.........

Whilst Holy Communion is reserved for Baptised Catholics, absolutely anyone can ask for a blessing instead of receiving Communion. Just stand in front of the priest and fold your arms across your chest, hands shoulder to shoulder, and the priest or minister will automatically know that you are asking for a Blessing.

Please don't forget.....

..... that we're singing at the 11:30 on Sunday 15th March rather than Sunday 1st March for Terry's Benemerenti Mass, with a reception in the hall after Mass. The music Terry has chosen is available from the Home page on our Web site (hint...... click on our window...left!). Jeannette Ryan is collecting for a gift from the Choir for Terry to mark the occasion; please do approach her to add to the collection (don't worry, Terry will only have access to UPDATE without these words!!).

Everyone is welcome to join the Plainchant Choir on the 1st March.

Easter Vigil 2015 4th April 8.30pm

We will not be joined by the Family Choir, as they have been asked to sing on Easter Sunday morning. The draft music list (for the Vigil and for Good Friday) is available from the Home page of our Web site (hint...... click on our window...above!). There will be a cantors practice in due course. I intend to be as faithful as possible to the liturgy in the Roman Missal this year, for the first time in many. Please arrive early as the church will be in darkness at the start.

Choir Outing 10th May 8.40am

£10 deposit to Jeannette, please, by end of March. Please ensure you have signed 'the board'.

We will leave Norbury from the bottom of Green Lane by coach at 8.40am prompt to attend 10:30 sung Mass at St. Mary Magdalen, Brighton. Our coach will take us as close as possible to our lunch venue in Brighton. Then a little free time for toe-dipping! Travel by coach to Carole's at Peacehaven for afternoon tea and cakes. The lunch venue has yet to be decided but the Choir will fund the coach travel for Choir members and maybe more when the lunch venue has been decided upon....... more in due course.

Parables Concert 14th June 7pm

Many thanks to John Ambler for finding a rendition of The Pharisee and the Publican on YouTube HERE. As John comments, what you see and hear is the Offertory Anthem in St. John's Episcopalian Church in Detroit, which appears to be stratospherically High Anglican!!! Do have a listen as the individual parts come across very clearly indeed.

Concert with our Orchestra Sunday 28th June 7.30pm

There will be a practice with the Orchestra on the day of the concert at 2.30pm - it should last about an hour, after which you will be free to go home or stay out for a pizza or something together. The Orchestra's conductor, Victor Jacob, will come to Choir on Tuesday 16th June to rehearse the Mass, and get to know us. There's a picture of Victor during a rehearsal HERE. We shall be singing Lloyd Webber's Prince of Peace Mass (which will also be the Mass we will be practising for our July Poly Mass) with the orchestration approved by the composer for them  in 1979. A lovely work in a terrific local venue.

Prayers, please.....

John Taylor, Jeannette Storace-Rutter, Oliva Msahala (Father Deo's mother), Anne Mitra, and Mary & Frank Elliott. I continue to ask you also for prayers, please, for a Choir member's Private Intention.

March's Quiz Question

What is the number of the Station of the Cross that features Simon of Cyrene? Answers to me before the end of the Easter Sunday, please.

February Quiz - a Word Search!

Can you find and circle in pen (or use a highlighter) 28 composers and arrangers whose music we sing (and have done, in almost all cases, very recently), one for each day of the month.

Click
HERE to open, print and start searching, or ask me for a hard copy.

Answers in to me by Tuesday 3rd March.......... Prizes for those who find the most!

January Quiz - Answers

Well done to Andrew and Joan for getting the most points. An interesting number of alternatives were offered, and most of them received bonus points; those that didn't should be credited with lateral thinking!! Some interesting carols were created too!!

The answers are up HERE.

Dates List

Our latest Dates List is available HERE. Please do, as always, have a look.... etc., etc....!!

Christmas 2015

I have now ordered copies of the Ronald Corp Christmas Mass for this year's Midnight Mass and Epiphany. We will not learn the Credo, just the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus & Benedictus. We will commence learning this in the 8-8.30pm slot on Tuesdays after the Parables Concert.

My thanks to all those who have sung at recent Weddings and Funerals. The money is now well spent as promised!

Three talks that may be of interest?

All are illustrated. There are only about 45 tickets available for each talk. Click on the images above for further details and how to book. Book quickly if you're interested.

Plainchant Choir

St. Bart's is the only parish I know that has continued to sing Gregorian chant at Mass continuously since pre-Poly Choir days. Huge thanks are due to Jane (Anne & Jim Rowntree before her, and I think Noel Murphy and Thad Allen even earlier) for so wholeheartedly encouraging this. The Plainchant Choir's music plan will appear on the Home page of our Web site, alongside our own, after Easter.

For your coffee breaks

The Pharisee and the Publican on YouTube HERE. I make no apologies for duplicating the note above - watch it and learn from it please.

The Holy Week music lists from Westminster Cathedral. No! You can't go on Good Friday afternoon. No! You can't go to the Easter Vigil!

Peter Kwasniewski's recent articles Music for The Sacred Sacrifice (PART 1) (PART 2) (PART 3) make for interesting reading.

For a total change of subject, Ian Visits comments on Sniffing on Public Transport! Ian's Web site is great for finding all sorts of interesting, and often obscure, visitor attractions in London, should you ever get the wander-lust!

A brief video of still images showing war damage in Streatham (some of it within our parish boundary) caused by V1 flying bombs in 1944.

Household Hacker has loads of tips for doing often difficult things with simplicity. Well worth exploring. I particularly liked the 10 Vinegar Life Hacks which is currently found down the page in the Popular uploads section. Back to the oven!! Should be a popular link for the ladies (whoops; sorry, I didn't really write that!!).

Hidden London's short words on Norbury, Lonesome, Streatham, Streatham Common and Streatham Vale.

And Finally.... perhaps those of you who don't remember watching THIS every Wednesday on Television might encourage some new members to join the Choir!!!!!
