St. Bartholomew's Polyphony Choir UPDATE  APRIL 2015

Terry Jupp's Benemerenti Mass

Thank you all so much for that! Wasn't it a really lovely occasion!! I was so delighted that it went so wonderfully; for Terry (and Bernard and the Jupp  family), for you all, for the Bishop and clergy, and the congregation. Well done indeed! The many terrific comments received afterwards reflected wonderfully for all involved, especially on you for the most prayerful singing.

There is a Web page of pictures to commemorate the occasion HERE. Joan has a number of photos, and will update our scrap books.

How lucky the parish is to have so many devoted to serving the Lord in it through music. It was something that Bishop Pat was very aware of throughout his recent, and very happy, visitation. I was pleasantly surprised that Music was unanimously seen as top of the 'gifts the parish has to offer' by each of the small groups of the new PPC when they were individually asked to compile a list of two or three. All credit to you all for your dedication.

I cannot recall the parish being endowed by the Holy Father with Benemerenti awards for a husband and wife ever before, and both are in our our Choir!! Wonderful, and richly deserved by you both, Terry and Bernard.

St. Alphonse Liguori's Stations of the Cross

As currently used at St. Bart's, recited by Father John Zuhlsdorf, but interlaced with the plainchant Stabat Mater HERE.

Good Friday 2015 3rd April 3pm

This is the parish's most-crowded service of the year. People start arriving well before 2pm for it. Please be aware when considering your travel times and parking arrangements.

Easter Vigil 2015 4th April 8.30pm

Please do ensure you arrive in time to order your music before 8.25pm as the church will be in total darkness soon after.

Choir Outing 10th May 8.40am

To confirm Jeannette's words in an earlier email, a £10 deposit is now due. The deposit secures you a place at the lunch table!

We will leave Norbury from the bottom of Green Lane by coach at 8.40am prompt to attend 10:30 sung Mass at St. Mary Magdalen, Brighton. Travel by coach the lunch venue, hopefully be at The Peacehaven Carvery (menu) in Peacehaven, which is, most conveniently, directly en-route from church to Carole's. Then a little free time for toe-dipping before tea and cakes at Carole's!

The Choir will pick up all the meal and travel expenses over and above your £10, bar your drinks with the meal!!!! A one or two ££s for the coach driver's tip would also be appreciated. I'm looking forward to the day. We have a more modern coach this year!!

Jane & John Windsor's Ruby Wedding Anniversary

As we did for their Silver Wedding on 27th May 2000, the Choir have been asked to sing at Jane & John's Mass celebrating their Ruby Wedding Anniversary at St. Bede's Clapham Park, on Saturday 6th June at noon, and then on to a lunch in St. Bede's Club Rooms. We will hopefully sing the same Mass and motets that we will have rehearsed for the 7th June Poly Mass at Bart's.

The Intention for our Poly Mass on 5th July will be at our request for 'Jane & John Windsor Ruby Wedding Anniversary'.

Parables Concert 14th June 7pm

Many thanks to John Ambler for finding a rendition of The Pharisee and the Publican on YouTube HERE. Please do listen and learn.

Many thanks to our gentlemen who have worked as hard as our descanters did before Christmas in arriving at 7.30pm on Tuesdays for that bit of extra practise. I am so grateful to you all. It is really paying dividends.

Concert with our Orchestra Sunday 28th June 7.30pm

There will be a practice with the Orchestra on the day of the concert at 2.30pm - it should last about an hour, after which you will be free to go home or stay out for a pizza or something together. We shall be singing Lloyd Webber's Prince of Peace Mass (which will also be the Mass we will be practising for our July Mass) with the orchestration approved for the Orchestra by the composer in 1982. The Orchestra's conductor, Victor Jacob, will come to Choir on Tuesday 16th June to rehearse the Mass, and get to know us. There's a picture of Victor during a rehearsal HERE. A lovely Mass to sing in such a well-known local Church of England venue.

Father Tom Cooper......

..... has announced his retirement from priestly duties, and will be leaving St. James the Great, Petts Wood on 19th April. I'm sure you will join me in wishing him a long and happy retirement.

Prayers, please.....

John Taylor and Jeannette Storace-Rutter are both, thankfully, making excellent recoveries; also Mary Lake's mother and family, Oliva Msahala (Father Deo's mother, who remains in hospital), Anne Mitra, and Mary & Frank Elliott. I continue to ask you also for prayers, please, for a Choir member's Private Intention.

April's Quiz Question

We have all seven readings and psalms again at the Easter Vigil this year. What is the minimum number that is liturgically approved, and are any of the seven 'must have'? Answers in by Sunday 3rd May, please.

March's Quiz Question

What is the number of the Station of the Cross that features Simon of Cyrene? Answers to me before Easter Sunday, please.

February's Word Search Answers

Congratulations to Joan, again! The answers are up HERE. I was amazed how many animals were hidden that I wasn't aware of - well done to Joan especially for finding seven!

I'll do a slightly smaller word search for the summer break, perhaps......

Veneration Good Friday

The Veneration of the Cross on Good Friday is open to absolutely everyone, not just Catholics. Please do not be afraid to come on down with us. Approach the cross, genuflect or bow as those before you as you get close the the Cross, and then bend to kiss the feet of the Crucified Jesus.

Asking for a blessing instead of receiving Holy Communion

Whilst Holy Communion is reserved for Baptised Catholics, absolutely anyone can ask for a blessing instead of receiving Communion. Just stand in front of the priest and fold your arms across your chest, hands shoulder to shoulder, and you will receiving a Blessing without question.

New Mass for Christmas

Copies of Ronald Corp's Christmas Mass have arrived. Our 'first half-hour' learning slot from 16th June.........!!

Plainchant Masses

Jane is now passing early notice of the music for the Plainchant Masses to me, and I have begun posting the details on the Home page of our Web site.

For your coffee breaks

Ronald Corp's The owl and the pussycat.

There's been a lot of talk in the press over recent months about defining 'British Values'. Someone I know came up with 'Please; Thank you; There's a queue here - join it!'. I thought that was rather neat!

Those of you with an affinity with south-west London might enjoy the historic archive photo's, and the social history illustrated, made available HERE: pity the captions are in white sometimes....

A wonderful 'Look at Life' feature from The Rank Organisation in 1959 looking at the British Road system.

Jane recently mentioned to us all that the London Oratory knows how to 'do candles' when it comes to their wonderful Forty Hours Devotions.

One to play in the background: Henry Litolff's Concert Symphonique No. 4 in D minor, with that famous 2nd movement Scherzo. My parents had an old 12" 78rpm record of the Scherzo. It absolutely wowed me as a youngster.

And, finally in memory of Doris Weeds. Her oft-stated favourite piece of music.
