Good Friday & Easter Vigil

Hopefully most of you will have read my email from Easter Sunday, and heard my words on Tuesday 14th April, so I will only repeat my heart-felt thanks to you all. A truly memorable weekend for the Good Friday and Easter Vigil liturgies at St. Bart's. Thanks to you all, and the hard work you put into the practising for the occasions.

Forty Years ago this month.....

....., on the 9th May, The Most Reverend Cyril Cowderoy, Archbishop of Southwark, celebrated a Pontifical High Mass of Thanksgiving at St. Bartholomew's following the consecration of our church by The Right Reverend Charles Henderson, Auxiliary Bishop in Southwark, three days earlier.

Twenty-five years ago, on the 27th May, the Choir sang High Mass at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.

Fifteen years ago, on the 27th May, the Choir sang Mass at St. Bede's, Clapham Park to celebrate the Silver Wedding Anniversary of John and Jane Windsor.

Five years ago, on the 28th May, the Polyphony Choir Web site went live.

Concert with our Orchestra Sunday 28th June 7.30pm

There will be a practice with the Orchestra on the day of the concert at 2.30pm - it should last about an hour, after which you will be free to go home or stay out for a pizza or something together. We shall be singing Lloyd Webber's Prince of Peace Mass (which will also be the Mass we will be practising for our July Mass) with the orchestration approved for the Orchestra by the composer in 1982. The Orchestra's conductor, Victor Jacob, will come to Choir on Tuesday 16th June to rehearse the Mass, and get to know us. There's a picture of Victor during a rehearsal HERE. A lovely work in a well-known local venue.

Nicholas Wilton.....

..... has a couple more piano pieces up for listening to from our Web site: Toccata and Spanish Dance.

May's Caption Competition

Click on the picture for a larger image. A prize for each of the two best captions to the picture above!

Entries to me by Sunday 7th June.

April's Quiz Question

We have all seven readings and psalms again at the Easter Vigil this year. What is the minimum number that is liturgically approved, and are any of the seven 'must have'? Answers in by Sunday 3rd May, please.

March's Quiz Question

Well done to Mary M. for correctly stating that it is the fifth Station of the Cross that features Simon of Cyrene.

Sorry it took me a little while to put up the recent prizes.

Jane & John Windsor's
Ruby Wedding Anniversary

As we did for their Silver Wedding on 27th May 2000, the Choir have been asked to sing at Jane & John's Mass celebrating their Ruby Wedding Anniversary at St. Bede's Clapham Park, on Saturday 6th June at noon, and then on to a lunch in St. Bede's Club Rooms.

We will sing the same Mass and motets that we will have rehearsed for the 7th June Poly Mass at Bart's. I do hope you will be able to be there. Jane has run our Plainchant Choir for most of her married life! Huge congratulations from us all to them both.

Parables - 14th June 7pm

Many thanks to John Ambler for finding a rendition of The Pharisee and the Publican on YouTube HERE. Please do listen and learn.

A detailed Tuesday rehearsal schedule will be available shortly that will bring our soloists, Rob and Andrew into play.

Prayers, please.....

John Taylor and Jeannette Storace-Rutter are both, thankfully, making excellent recoveries; also Mary Lake's mother and family, Oliva Msahala (Father Deo's mother, who remains in hospital), Anne Mitra, and Mary & Frank Elliott. I continue to ask you also for prayers, please, for a Choir member's Private Intention.

Choir Outing 10th May 8.40am

We will leave Norbury from the bottom of Green Lane by coach at 8.40am prompt to attend 10:30 sung Mass at St. Mary Magdalen, Brighton. Our coach will take us to our lunch venue, a carvery, The Peacehaven, just up the road from Carole's The probable menu is HERE (I see there's one pudding that is 'eat as much as you like'!! Shocking!!!). Then travel to Carole's, some free time for toe-dipping, or maybe a little walk along the cliff tops! Carole is kindly putting on afternoon tea and cakes for us all. Apart from your £10 deposit the Choir will carry the cost of everything else bar your drinks with lunch and a tip (£1) for the coach driver at the end of the day - a bargain day out thanks to Doris Weed's bequest!

For your coffee breaks

"Composers all over the world are hungry to write sacred music": An interesting piece by Matthew Schellhorn in the Catholic Herald.

"The Vocations Crisis is Man-Made - Those Who Made it Are Now in Their End-Game" - a view from The Torch of Faith.

The Crystal Palace - before, during and after, and that wonderful motor racing circuit in 1969.

How to quickly peel a hard-boiled in a glass of water, or even two at once!!

Philip Wilby's lovely setting of If ye love me, perfect for Maundy Thursday.
