Many Congratulations to Antony & Claire

Dominic Benjamin Thomas Matthews was safely born at 17:06 on Tuesday 16th June, weighing 8lb 13oz. Happy news indeed!

We send our heartiest congratulations to you both, and very much look forward to meeting baby Dominic.

Parables

Once again, very well done to you all, especially Andrew, Rob and Antony, for a wonderful performance. I was really proud (a deadly sin?!) of you all.

Concert with Orchestra - Sunday 28th June 7.30 and Rehearsal 2.30pm

Getting very close now! The venue is St. Philip's Church, Beech Road, Norbury SW16 4NW. Entry is now £5, with a retiring collection - Full details of the concert may be found here HERE. Do invite others to swell the audience!

We will have seats for the rehearsal as it will, no doubt, be stop and start for us, but no seats for the concert, which will be a straight sing-through of the Lloyd Webber Mass. A meal of some kind between rehearsal and concert perhaps, for those who wish to, and are to, partake? Maybe even a drink afterwards?!!

Masses for Jane & John Windsor's Ruby Wedding Anniversary

Many thanks to those who attended Jane & John's 40th Mass at St. Bede's.

We are having our 5th July Mass at Bart's said for the occasion, and will shall have a small reception in the upstairs hall after Mass and a glass of bubbly with them both.

Choir Party and Music Checking

Jane will be asking you for the food you will be preparing to bring to our annual Party on 7th July, and making suggestions to avoid duplication. If you would rather put a tenner in the pot towards the event, then do let her know...... and pass her the dosh!

Music checking on 14th July is a must-attend event, please. Thee will be a number of alterations made to the repertoire you hold in your folders for the coming year's liturgies. If it is absolutely unavoidable that you cannot attend, then please do make arrangements with someone to check your folder and update it for you on the night. Thank you.

New Cantors

Many thanks to Jaru and Andrew for agreeing to join our list of Cantors. I will circulate a revised Dates List at our Party reflecting various changes (please also read November Masses below).

July's Quiz Question

What is the name of the bridge at the point Norbury Brook becomes the River Graveney?

June's Quiz Question

The cincture is the correct name for the girdle, and is a vestment worn around the alb on the priest's waist.

There were no correct answers to the question.

May's Caption Competition

The prizes go to Bernard for "Benemerenti? I thought that was a cocktail!" and to the person (who was it?) that provided "Did he really say that?!".

My contribution was "Playing 'peep-bo!' was always a favourite party game for the older generations", but I have not awarded myself a prize!

July Mass

As you all know, Father Dennis Paul, who so often says Mass at Bart's when one of the parish priests is away, has difficulties with standing and being on the sanctuary for too long. As he will be saying our Poly Mass on 5th July I have shortened the music a little. See HERE.

November Masses

As the eagled-eyed among you will have noticed, Bishop Pat has changed the date that he coming to bestow the sacrament of Confirmation at St. Bartholomew's from the 22nd November to 15th November. This means that we are able to return to singing on the great feast of Christ the King on the 22nd.

Another step towards Deacon

Ged Perkins from St. Bartholomew's
being conferred with the ministry of Acolyte
at the church of The Annunciation and St. Augustine, Beckenham Hill and Bellingham,
by Bishop Pat Lynch on Friday 5th June 2015

For your coffee breaks

St. Charles Lwanga: I remember invoking his name on a Tuesday evening at some time in years past as the saint of the day. Some uncomfortable parallels with the way the world seems to be going today........

The official opening of the Granada cinema in Brixton in 1957. When I watched this, it was immediately followed by a fascinating silent film from 1925 entitled 'Oxford University Press and the Making of a Book'. The film was made by the FBI.

Going under ground, for a drone's-eye view of Europe's biggest construction project.

Prayers, please.....

.... for the happy repose of the soul of Stefan Czarnecki. Stefan was the younger son of Jan and Irena Czarnecki Both Chris and Stefan where born with significant handicaps. Jan was a long-serving and much loved tenor with us. Remember them all, now sadly deceased, please.

Special prayers for our Carole as she recovers from her operation and awaits the results of the post-operative tests.

Please remember also Mary Lake's mother and family, Anne Mitra, and Mary & Frank Elliott. I continue to ask you also for prayers, please, for a Choir member's Private Intention.

Three little words

I have a ‘Study Copy’ of the latest (2010) Roman Missal. It replicates exactly the Altar Missal even to the pagination, in a handy almost A5 size. As such, it includes all the rubrics (instructions on how to say Mass) as well as the words that are required to be said.

Recently, I noticed that immediately  before saying “Pray, brethren, that my sacrifice and yours……” the instruction to the priest reads “
Standing at the middle of the altar, facing the people, extending and then joining his hands, he says:. It struck me as a little odd that he should be specifically instructed to 'face the people', so I did a little research.

It transpires that Vatican II never ever envisaged or suggested that the priest should face the people when saying Mass. It presupposed that the priest and the people would continue to face east together. There has been no liturgical legislation to change this position in the years since. Accordingly the priest is still instructed to turn and face the people for that particular invitation ahead of the Eucharistic Prayer.
