St. Bartholomew's Polyphony Choir UPDATE  MARCH 2016

2016 Choir Outing

Firstly, please note that the date has changed from 26th June to 12th June.

Thanks to Ken, arrangements are in the process of being laid for us to sing at the 10.15am Mass at St. Swithun's, Southsea, Portsmouth. Doris will very kindly be providing a coach for us to travel there in (and back!), and we shall have lunch together after Mass before having time at leisure in Portsmouth.

As soon as I hear from Ken that our visit is okay with the church I will put a board round so I know who is definitely able to join us. This board will determine if we can confirm with Father Kaz that we will have the necessary vocal resources to sing at Mass on the day.

I will not be responsible for hiring the coach this year (some of you may be pleased to learn!); Jeannette will be again be arranging something a little more modern for our travel needs.

St. Swithun's doesn't seem to have a Web site, but you are able to see the exterior of the church here.

Full details will be given once we have confirmed we have a quorum able to attend, but, in the meantime, please do put the date in your diaries and on your calendars.

Our latest Dates List may be found HERE.

Triduum 2016

As you aware, we have Maundy Thursday with the Plainchant Choir at 8pm this year (a return to something that was a long-standing tradition at Bart's for many years) in addition to Good Friday 3pm and The Easter Vigil at 8.30pm.

You should all have a draft outline of the music, as it was given out on Tuesday 23rd February, but if not it may be found HERE.

In addition, please do feel free to join the Hymn and Plainchant Choirs at the 11.30am Palm Sunday Mass, which will start with a procession from the hall. The music is straightforward and you can view what we are most likely to be singing HERE.

Practice as usual on 29th March

We have our normal 11:30 'first of the month' Mass on 3rd April, so I'm afraid we will need to practise for it on the Tuesday after Easter.

The 2016 singing workshop

I am still looking at Saturday 7th May, and will let you know in a couple of weeks or so.

The Choir's 50th Anniversary

This occurs on Thursday 19th September 2019 - just saying!

From the Archive

The earliest Sunday Music List I still have on my computer is from 1st October 1995. Have a look HERE.

Coffee Morning 29th May

Please be aware this has now been cancelled. You may relax until Sunday 30th October!

Plainchant Choir

Please remember the reinstated monthly practice takes place at 7.30pm promptly on Tuesday 15 March for Palm Sunday's Mass with the Hymn Choir.

Family Choir

If you know of someone who may be interested in re-forming the Family Choir, then please do let me know. Both the clergy and I would really like to see a choir for the younger members of the parish community, whether it be very young, young, or teen. So far it has proved impossible to find someone with the appropriate skills prepared to offer the necessary commitment.

Prayers, please.....

For George Meyern, George Norton, Christine and Eugene, Maria & Family, Anne Mitra, Mary & Frank Elliott, Madeleine and her husband and two Choir members' special intentions. Please also remember Ken's mother Patsy, Jeannette's mother, Hazel and Andrew's mother, Josie in your prayers at this time.

Sorry I haven't been able to respond to those who have requested news of George Norton - his most recent Blog entry makes interesting reading.

For your coffee breaks

Sir Anthony Hopkins' Waltz :'And The Waltz Goes On' (Kudos to DPB).

Norbury's forthcoming blanket 20mph speed limit - Map

The Top 10 Greatest Requiems - an interesting list, with much that may be worth exploring.

The Ave Maria Bells in Rome - fascinating!

Crystal Palace Park in the snow - January 2016: another fascinating view from a drone.

For those interested in fairly local history there is a page on the Wandle Industrial Museum's Web site the devoted to the Surrey Iron Railway.

Croydon's Trinity Boy's Choir re-interpret Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody.

The Statue!

On This Day - a Web site totally devoted to anniversaries.

The Gregorian Chant Hymns Web site again. Some really wonderful resources.

And finally, Percy Grainger's 19 minute ballet score, The Warriors, mentioned in Michael White's Music Review in the Catholic Herald of 5 February; "....with three grand pianos and 12 percussionists. Unsubtle, brazen but cathartic (you feel better when it's over)...".

HOW DO YOU EAR YOURS?
