St. Bartholomew's Polyphony Choir UPDATE JANUARY 2017

Thank you and Phew!

Well done indeed for the Christmas Carol Concert and Midnight Mass.

The Concert exceeded all my expectations, and, as you gathered from the warmth of the reception for you all at the end, and in the hall afterwards, our audience loved it (better than last year, a number of people said, which says it all, because last year was great! O Holy Night was a spine-tingler, and there moments that were 'bordering on sublime'! Sleep! Holy Babe! comes to mind, and Silent Night.

Well done to Jeannette and Antony especially, and a word of thanks for the descanters who were on really top form! I was thrilled for you all. Thank you.

Midnight Mass - I have to say that I reached the end of this with a huge sigh of relief as we were so depleted in numbers, and yet you sounded terrific. Enormous thanks to Bernard for waggling the stick. The only nit-wit on the night was me, as I played the Willcocks 1 accompaniment to Hark the Herald rather than the Willcocks 5. Sorry all - I relaxed just too soon!!

Sunday's New Year's Day 11:30 Mass completes our Christmas schedule bar the all-important post-Christmas drinks in the upper hall on 3 January.

Stations of the Cross 2017

I'd quite like us to sing at 4pm on just one Sunday afternoon during Lent. Stabat Mater between stations, and then O Salutaris, Tantum Ergo and Adoremus for Benediction.......

Choir Diary Dates

The latest list of forthcoming dates is available HERE, and I'd be grateful if you'd print it out and replace the previous version for reference. I'll have paper copies to give out to the three choir members who do not have email, and a few more for those of you who do not have printers.

Prayers, please

Joe Ryan continues to make progress on what is going to be a lengthy journey to recovery. He was able to spend a short while at home with the family on Christmas Day. Please do continue to remember him, Jeannette and their extended family.

Prayers are still very much needed for Carole Winch as she recovers from a stroke. Things are gently improving, and Carole is managing, little by little, to walk without the aid of a Zimmer and reports that her writing is improving.

Also to be remembered: Anne Rowntree (who's leg is now very much on the mend), George Meyern, George Norton, Mary & Frank Elliott, Christine & Eugene, Maria & Family, Anne Mitra, Jeannette's mother Hazel, and Carole's husband Mike in your prayers.

Festival of Carols in two minutes!

Cantors

7.45pm Practices: Jeannette 31 January, Andrew 28 February and Ken 28 March. Please note in your diaries.

Plainchant Choir

The next practice will take place on 10 January at 19:30 to prepare for the 11:30 Mass on 15 January.

Daniel Battle -
Recital at Westminster Cathedral

Daniel gives the Sunday afternoon recital at Westminster Cathedral on 30 April next. Probably at 16:45 for half an hour, as is customary at the cathedral, with free entry. I'll be there - after our Coffee Morning!

For your coffee breaks

A Hallelujah Christmas - very moving indeed (hat-tip to Jo Taylor).

A lovely piece on John Taylor and the Christmas Crib on Streatham Common.

Having mentioned Westminster Cathedral elsewhere, THIS looks as if it will be a delightful choral concert for upper voices.

The BBC's ultimate Christmas Carol Quiz. You should get all 12 correct!!

London's Routemaster Bus eleven years after it retired.

Bad service on the railway? See Sorry for the Inconvenience!

For those of you with a knowledge of, or connections with, Mitcham there is a huge archive of pics, and quite a few words, to be found HERE.

Whitebait? I love it, but never imagined it had such a fascinating history associated with the Thames!!

1,000 years of European borders in a little over three minutes - amazing!

And finally... if you have continued to use a Yahoo! email address  despite everything they have thrown at you, you might wish to consider moving to Gmail or a safer email service provider (not Hotmail, Sky or BT, which all have been consistently compromised by Yahoo!'s problems).
