St. Bartholomew's Polyphony Choir UPDATE AIUGUST 2019

2019 Choir 50 Mass - 11:30 22 September - EXTREMELY IMPORTANT

The next practice on Tuesday 17 September is a 'must attend' occasion, please. It will be our final rehearsal before our big occasion! A last reminder of the music we shall be singing.

Cantors - Jeannette (19:30) and Ken (19:45) promptly, please, on 17 September.

Archbishop John will be celebrating Mass for us with, I believe, Father Philip as MC. Father Michael will also be attending, and hopefully Father Paul.

New lighting in the church

By the time we return to choir on 17 September the lighting system will have been completely renewed. With LEDs throughout, it is is anticipated that it will be much brighter than the old lighting, and from what I've seen to date, it seems a much needed, and very welcome, upgrade that should be helpful to all of us, upstairs and down.

When finances permit, the church will be redecorated, and at that time the electric wiring for the new heating and new lighting will mostly disappear from view. The Blessed Sacrament chapel will receive a re-paint sooner, which is great news; its ceiling is almost black as I write! Westminster Cathedral comes to mind!!

The August Jigsaw as it's his Feast Day on 24 August, and as depicted by Rembrandt - challenging!

Latest Forthcoming Dates List

The latest Dates List (dated 19 June) may be found HERE. Hard copies will be distributed at our Choir Party on 9 July.

11:30 Mass 13 October 2019

The 11:30 Mass on this occasion will be celebrated on the day of the Canonisation of Cardinal John Henry Newman.

This will make Cardinal Newman the first English person who has lived since the 17th century officially recognised as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church - find out more about him, and all about his Canonisation HERE.

Newman's words are much-loved, and we shall be singing them to the old, and best-known, traditional Catholic Hymn Tunes.

Whilst I do not intend to make this Mass obligatory, it would be wonderful to see as many of you as possible join us to lead the singing.

Jean Cowie is now home, and prayers, please, for a complete recuperation.

For your coffee breaks

If you were one of the many to have tried to watch Bishop John's Installation at St. George's Cathedral only to be defeated by the Cathedral's technical problems, then be aware that the Archdiocese has released a recording of the occasion here.

We shall be singing this for our Christmas Concert this year - it's not a brilliant recording, but might help you pick up of some of the rhythms...

The magnificently restored Roman Catholic church of St. Monica.

Now here's a good restaurant review!

London's Cultural Infrastructure Map - THIS is something worthy of exploration!

Beware the Amazon 'Brushing' Scam.

When Classical Music was Punk.

BBC Proms' fiendishly difficult music quiz.

An interesting piece on Confession from Father Tim Finigan. Also from Father Tim is this piece all about Votive Masses.

A piece marking the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of man setting foot on the moon.

Have you ever heard of Stambourne Woods?

A rather beautifully put together, and thought provoking, video from Father David Nix.

Boris Johnson becomes the first baptised Catholic to be made Prime Minister.

Croydon Airport as recalled by Fred Ivey.

And finally, the Catholic Directory of England & Wales. A great resource if you're travelling in the two countries - worth checking the parish Website, if offered, for accuracy. I can't find a similarly dedicated one from the Bishops of Scotland?
