A week early this time!

Huge thanks to all who responded to the call for volunteers to sing over Easter; whether you are able to join us or (quite understandably) not, it was good to hear from so many of you. We have a good quorum of singers, and the list is now closed. I'll be emailing out to those felt able to sing on Thursday 25 March.

A very Happy Easter to you all. Might we look forward to our July party; to Christmas even?

Love, Tony x

PS: Please give an honest input into the Diocesan Survey below. Your parish is not identified.

Diocesan Survey

The diocesan Agency for Evangelisation and Catechesis has partnered with other dioceses to produce to survey which aims to find out about the experiences of Catholics during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The survey will help the Diocese to understand what has been happening whilst churches have been closed, or opened only for limited periods of time, and Catholics have had to practice their faith 'at a distance'.

Please consider contributing to this survey, selecting the 'Archdiocese of Southwark' from the drop-down menu, so that we can hear about what God has been doing and what he wants to say to us about the future of the Church in this part of England and Wales.

The survey should take about 10 minutes to complete and the deadline for submission is 4 July 2021.

Complete the survey

You may also, if you haven't done so already, like to respond to this from the faithful Coalition for Marriage.

April Jigsaw - a lovely image of something you are probably all familiar with - 60 pieces.

Email received 1 March 2021:

I have just read online about your CD of the performance of ‘Daughter of Jairus’ from 2001, and I am very disappointed to see that it is out of stock. I wonder if it would be possible for someone to burn me a CDR copy of it or perhaps send mp3 files? I will gladly pay the normal cost of £7.50.

I am Stainer’s great-grandson, and nephew of the late John Stainer (1915-2014) who is mentioned in the description of the CD on your web site.

Incidentally I have recently been annotating some diaries written by Eliza Randall, who married Sir John and later became Lady Stainer. They cover the years 1862-1866. She lived in Oxford, the daughter of a prosperous shopkeeper and local politician who did not look kindly on a 21 year-old organist (of Magdalen College) from a lowly background wanting to marry his 25 year-old daughter. The two had to correspond in secret, but after Stainer more than proved himself by earning his degree and doctorate, and becoming the leading light in the Oxford musical scene, Thomas Randall allowed the two to marry.

The only reason for mentioning this is that Eliza, who was very musical and a good pianist, spent several weeks each year in Streatham Hill – just a couple of doors down from the station – with family friends, and had several other friends in the area. They all used to frequent the Crystal Palace concerts.

With kind regards, Andrew Stainer, Bath

Andrew has received a CD with our compliments.

Prayers, please

John started his long course of four-weekly rounds of chemotherapy on 9 March - please remember him in your prayers. I spoke to him on the day, and he was, in good form!

Please also continue to pray for Terry J., Daniel, Maria's recovery, Veronica's sister Monica, Ken's niece Beth, and Mary & Frank Elliott.

Many congratulations to Eddie!

On 7 March he celebrated his 80th birthday. Had we been at Choir the following Tuesday we would undoubtedly have sung our 'special song'!!

I wonder if any of you remember this campaign from 1968? I was in the third year at secondary school at the time (Lower Grammar to those of you familiar with Jesuit education!), and remember these stickers being made freely available by, presumably, a national newspaper. I remember picking up sheets of them from the newspaper kiosk in the entrance to Raynes Park station on the way to school, and very patriotically applying them in places (including Rome!!) that only adolescent boys will.
